Our effort to offer fabrics that reduce environmental impact without compromising durability or design is an integral part of our product selection and design process. You will find these symbols on many of our sample cards.
return to top In keeping with our strong commitment to the environment and to our planet, Douglass Industries strives to protect our resources, lessen our footprint on the planet, and engage in carbon neutral practices wherever possible. Please take a few minutes to read more about these policies and practices...Our Plant and Offices: Woven With WindpowerBy choosing to participate in New Jersey's Clean Power Program, we power our looms with renewable energy provided by a wind farm located right here at the Jersey shore.
return to top RecyclingDouglass aggressively recycles both consumer waste products (plastic and glass bottles, cans, newspapers, cardboard, etc.) and materials used in every day operations. Our pallets and shipping tubes are regularly re-used. When shipping tubes can no longer be used, they are recycled through the Atlantic County Utilities Authority. In addition, the shipping bags used to package our products are made from recycled materials.
return to top Increasing Efficiency, Reducing WasteNew warehouse technology is currently being implemented to process shipments electronically and eliminate wasteful paper products.
return to top Energy EfficiencyProgrammed thermostats reduce heating and air conditioning consumption and energy efficient fluorescent bulbs are used in all lighting fixtures.
return to top Our Fabrics and Finishes: OlefinFabrics made from polypropylene yarns are a by-product of industrial waste (gasoline manufacturing) and require less energy to produce. They produce the least waste of synthetic fibers, none of it harmful industrial waste. They are completely recyclable and have been independently certified by MBDC as a preferred polymer, containing no harmful ingredients and approved for use in Cradle to Cradle certification.
return to top Solution Dyed YarnsIn solution dyeing, the color is added to the fiber before the yarn is extruded. This eliminates dying yarn or fabric through traditional methods, which require more energy and can produce harmful waste water.
return to top Recycled Yarn and Reduced Chemical ContentDouglass now offers coated fabrics that are PVC free, fabrics that have low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emitting materials, and finishes (such as GreenShield ™) that use 10 times less fluorocarbons and 1/3 less chemicals than other finishes, yet have the same performance features. Douglass also offers a number of collections that use recycled yarn.
return to top Carbon Neutral StrategiesMore than 25% of our upholstery fabrics are sourced, manufactured and finished within 100 miles of our warehouses. This supports both the local economy and reduces the environmental impact, resulting in less fuel usage. Douglass forecasts inventory requirements and consolidates inbound shipments in an attempt to reduce fuel costs and reduce the amount of carbon emissions that are released into the environment.
